Clinical Experiences/Interests:Dr. Crick specializes in providing mental health and performance enhancement services for student athletes. He has offered such services in large athletic departments within the Big 12, Big 10, and Pac 12 conferences. Dr. Crick has expertise in treating mood and anxiety concerns, interpersonal difficulties, fostering stress management strategies, navigating athlete-coach conflict, improving team dynamics, managing performance anxiety, and enhancing motivation. He also has obtained extensive experience treating trauma-related concerns, grief and loss reactions, disordered eating, and body image difficulties within student athlete populations. Dr. Crick is familiar with navigating the systems present within large athletic departments that impact student athletes. While maintaining client confidentiality to the highest degree, he has experience consulting with coaches, athletic trainers, physical therapists, and nutritionists to foster an environment that promotes wellness for student athletes. As a former student athlete, Dr. Crick understands the unique, complex, and challenging nature of the student athlete experience and strives to make this journey a positive one for UCLA’s student athlete population.
Approach to Treatment: In session, Dr. Crick utilizes an empirically supported, integrative approach to treatment that is founded in creating a warm and collaborative relationship in the room. Through this relationship, he aims to assist student athletes in identifying and developing patterns/strategies that are aligned with their values and most conducive to pursuing their needs and goals. Dr. Crick regularly utilizes cognitive-behavioral, emotion-focused, and ACT-based strategies to engage in this process with clients. In team settings, Dr. Crick incorporates experiential activities to foster cohesion, insight, trust, and self-care conducive to optimal team performance and environmental wellness.
